It means 'shaved ice' in Japanese. Of course it's very popular during summer time, especially this summer, it's extremely hot in Japan, so it would be sold a lot. There are many kind of flavor for syrup, such as strawberry, melon, coffee, or green tea, and people like condensed milk on it. It used to be a vendor food at summer festival, but these days, you can find it at cafes, or restaurants.
